2022 Calendar: Obligatory bridges and holidays that await us
Whether it's for timely planning of vacations, long weekends or rest periods, it's essential to stay abreast of the mandatory holidays and bridges of 2022.

Mandatory holidays of 2022

Mandatory holidays are provided for in Portuguese law, in the Labor Code, more specifically in Article 234.

This article lists those which are officially considered to be mandatory holidays, and which must therefore be respected as days of rest every year.

What are, after all, obligatory holidays?
In plain terms, public holidays are those days on which employees are officially required to be off work.

During mandatory holidays, employers, companies, and institutions are required by law to give their employees time off work.

There are, however, areas of activity that remain open all year round, so the special conditions of these exceptions should be taken into account.

What are the mandatory holidays in Portugal?
With all the changes that are being made to calendars over time, it is normal for there to be some doubts about which holidays are actually mandatory in Portugal today.

Thus, the mandatory holidays considered by the Labor Code are:
  • January 1, New Year's Day, which falls on a Saturday;
  • April 15th, Good Friday
  • April 17th, Easter Sunday;
  • April 25, Liberty Day (Monday)
  • May 1, Labor Day (Sunday)
  • June 10, Portugal Day (Friday)
  • June 16, Corpus Christi (Thursday)
  • August 15, Assumption Day (Monday)
  • October 5, Implantation of the Republic (Wednesday)
  • November 1, All Saints' Day (Tuesday)
  • December 1, Independence Restoration Day (Thursday);
  • December 8, Immaculate Conception Day (Thursday);
  • December 25, Christmas Day (Sunday).
The remaining holidays may or may not be considered rest days, as is the case, for example, with Carnival.

Regarding Carnival
Carnaval Tuesday, on March 1, is adopted in many parts of the country as an obligatory national holiday, and this fact has been the subject of some attempts to bring the matter up for parliamentary discussion.

What gives strength to this theory is the fact that schools normally close on this day, and that it is an important economic stimulating factor in many municipalities (there are countless Carnival parades and marches taking place in various municipalities).

However, in formal terms, Carnaval Tuesday is still considered an optional holiday.

Municipal Holidays and Popular Saints
As we already know, in Lisbon and Porto municipal holidays correspond to Santo António and São João, celebrated on June 13 (Monday) and June 24 (Friday), respectively. As for Saint Peter's, June 29th will fall on a Wednesday in 2022.

It is important to emphasize the fact that municipal holidays are fixed by each municipality, that is, they are optional holidays. Thus, they are taken by the employee if provided for in his or her work contract or collective bargaining agreement.

Which services are closed on mandatory holidays?
As a rule, on mandatory holidays the institutions that close their activities are the same ones that do so on Sundays. We are therefore talking about schools, banks, post offices and government offices, as well as many stores, supermarkets and factories.

Long weekends in 2022

In 2022 there are no holidays or bridges in January (New Year's Day is on a Saturday), February and May (May 1st is a Sunday and May 13th is not a holiday).

As for July and September, they are as always, months without holidays. However, all is not lost. There are several bridges and long weekends throughout the other months of the year.

In 2022 there are 4 mandatory holidays that fall on a weekend: New Year's Day, celebrated on January 1st, April 17th (Easter), May 1st, and Christmas, celebrated on December 25th.

As far as long weekends are concerned, there are 4. Besides Good Friday celebrated on April 15th, you can also enjoy a mini-holiday on April 25th, the vacation on June 10th, and August 15th, the day of Our Lady's Assumption.

As for bridges, you will be able to take 4, taking into account that there are mandatory holidays that fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays, such as Corpus Christi on June 16, Independence Restoration Day, celebrated on December 1, and Immaculate Conception Day on December 8.

All Saints Day will be on a Tuesday and there will also be the possibility of a bridge.

In addition to all these holidays, there is also Carnaval, on March 1, which is always celebrated on a Tuesday, allowing for bridging holidays (for those who have the opportunity).
