Pet-friendly beaches: Find out 6 beaches where you can walk along the shore with your pet
If you want to take your pet for a walk on the beach, find out about six beaches for dogs and what precautions you should take.

Pet friendly beaches are specific places that municipalities have adapted to welcome four-legged friends. These areas are properly signposted at the entrance and have specific equipment for animals, such as bag dispensers and litter bins, as well as drinking fountains.

The rules are fixed at the entrance of the beach.

Dog-friendly beaches in Portugal

#1. Fisherman's Beach, Oeiras
Located next to the Nautical Center of Paço de Arcos, Praia dos Pescadores is, since June 2020, one of the "pet friendly" beaches in Portugal. To be able to take your pet bathing, you must certify the conditions of hygiene and coexistence stipulated by the Municipality of Oeiras.

The animal will have to wear a collar or harness and muzzle or leash, it is mandatory to collect waste and protect animals from adverse weather conditions. It is also necessary to carry your Pet Identification Document (DIAC), Pet Passport (CAP) or Health Bulletin for Dogs and Cats.

The beach is equipped with a drinking fountain, a limited area for people accompanied by pets, a dispenser for dog waste bags and subject to regular cleaning.

#2. Portinho da Areia Norte Beach, Peniche
On the marginal that leads to Cabo Carvoeiro, in Peniche, you'll find the Portinho da Areia Norte beach, the first in the country to allow dogs to stay and circulate.

You should note that the use of a leash is mandatory and, if the dog is potentially dangerous, you should also use a muzzle.

On this dog beach you can find dispensers for pet waste bags and garbage cans.

#3. Coral Beach, Viana do Castelo
Further north, in Viana do Castelo, there is also a beach to walk with your four-legged friend without fear of penalties. To take your dog to Coral Beach, you'll have to follow the rules stipulated by the municipality.

Animals must wear a collar or harness, be accompanied by their owners at all times, and preferably on a leash. Dogs of dangerous weighted breeds are required to wear a muzzle in the space. There will be garbage cans and bags for animal waste scattered along the beach, which must be collected by the owners.

#4. Suave Mar Beach, Esposende
This is one of the two "pet friendly" beaches in the municipality of Esposende. The space that allows you to take your dog for a swim is located between the Praia Suave Mar Norte and the Praia de Cepães, and is properly equipped with deposits for the collection of waste and water points.

To access this beach, dogs must be identified and licensed in the Parish Council of their area of residence, wearing a collar, pectoral or muzzle and leash.

#5. Ramalha Sul Beach, Esposende
The second beach for dogs in the municipality of Esposende is located in the village of Apúlia, more specifically in the southern part of Ramalha Beach. This beach is equipped with signs with the rules of use and circulation, devices for canine waste and drinking fountains.

To enjoy a day at the beach with your dog, just follow the rules, identical to those of Suave Mar Beach.

#6. Amoreiras Beach, Torres Vedras
For your four-legged friend to feel welcome at this beach, located in Santa Cruz, the Torres Vedras city council provides drinking fountains, bag dispensers, and also shelters for animals, decorated like the typical beach huts of this area.

Animals must wear a collar or harness and a muzzle or leash, as well as means of restraint, in the case of dangerous breeds of dogs. They must be registered and licensed. They must also be accompanied by the health bulletin and proof of electronic identification (annual renewal).

Dogs of dangerous or potentially dangerous breeds may only frequent these beaches, or any other public space, if they comply with legal obligations, including having civil liability insurance.

How to know if you can take your dog to the beach?
As a rule, concessionary beaches, that is, with a flag, lifeguards and a restaurant/terrace area for support, do not allow dogs to stay during the bathing season.

However, since there is no legislation that forbids it, for this prevention to be effective, two requirements must be met at the entrance of the beach
  • Appropriate signage indicating the prohibition of dogs
  • Beach notice with this information. It is up to the Port Authority to publish, at the entrance of the beach, this document that establishes the rules of use of the space. See here an example for the 2020 bathing season.

Non-concessioned beaches, as a rule, can be frequented by dogs all year round, except if there are signs prohibiting their stay. So before you go to a non-licensed beach with your dog, check if there is a sign prohibiting this.

Remember that you will always have to follow the rules applied to the circulation of animals on public roads, such as wearing a collar or harness and a muzzle or leash, with the name and contact details of the animal's keeper.

Exceptions
Assistance dogs that are properly trained or undergoing training may accompany their owners on trips to the beach. According to the legislation, assistance dogs fall into three categories:
  • Guide dog, to assist person with visual impairment;
  • Dog for the deaf, to help people with hearing impairment;
  • Service dogs, to help people with mental, organic, or motor disabilities.

Situations that must have liability insurance for dogs
Liability insurance is mandatory for anyone who owns dogs that are considered dangerous or potentially dangerous, such as, for example, the Rottweiller or Pitt Bull Terrier.

However, even if your dog does not belong to the list of dangerous dogs, nor has attacked another person or animal, a liability insurance policy will be useful for those times when your big dog decides to get into mischief and destroy your neighbor's yard.
