There have been several studies in recent years that affirm consumer trends in choosing more environmentally friendly appliances and products, at a time when there is increasing concern about the planet, energy costs and monthly savings in the monthly budgets of each family.

The energy transition is a growing trend on a global scale, gradually beginning to be introduced in Portugal through a wider range of options, in large commercial areas, and even through the municipal strategies that municipalities and the Government are beginning to implement, through support and incentives.

Investing with sustainability in mind is, in itself, a sustainable way to act in this direction, and also to monetise energy bills, which can go down a lot depending on the type of appliance you buy for your home. It may seem like an irrelevant action, but the truth is that choosing sustainable appliances will bring more benefits to your home and your budget than you realise.

Why choose sustainable products?

If yours is a typical kitchen, including a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, oven, microwave, and many other small appliances that you use daily to make your meals, it's the place in the house where you probably use the most energy. You may be used to receiving a certain amount on your monthly bill, which you pay without thinking twice, but have you ever stopped to look around and realise what kind of machines you have in your possession, and the kind of consumption they cause?

Well, there are solutions you can adopt to lower your electricity and even water bills, by purchasing machines with a high energy rating and other products that make use of resources, avoiding waste or high amounts at the end of each month.

To achieve this goal, you just need to look for appliances with good energy ratios, and whose quality/price will pay off in the long run. A more expensive washing machine with an A energy rating, although it may cost you more money initially, will certainly bring you a return in the long run, which you will notice in your monthly consumption.

What is energy efficiency anyway?

An appliance with these characteristics will need less energy to perform its functions, working more efficiently and saving you more money. To find out exactly how much energy your household appliance will use, you should check its energy label, which can range from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), according to the EU/2017/1369 regulation.

Thus, with a colour scale ranging from green to red, you should interpret the labels as follows:

  • Classification A (dark green): very efficient household appliance with minimal energy consumption;
  • B and C classification (lighter green scale): high efficiency household appliance;
  • Rating D, E, F and G (scale ranging from yellow, orange and red): low efficiency appliance with high energy consumption.

By opting for the highest rating, which in this case can range from A to C, you will be assuming greater financial profitability and also opting for an appliance with greater durability.

Other types of sustainable choices

Above we mentioned a typical kitchen, which uses a number of electrical appliances that can consume a lot of energy on a daily basis. However, because there are other rooms where spending can be just as high, it's important to opt for a range of sustainable choices that will give you financial respite when it comes to energy consumption.

Apart from household appliances, which have a large impact on daily consumption, you probably have other small appliances, and even objects that you plug in, that generate as much or more impact on your bills, and there is a need for optimised management of these uses and, above all, a conscious choice regarding the materials and objects you choose for your daily life. We are talking, for example, about LED bulbs, whose consumption is lower than that of traditional bulbs, or opting for water filters, for example, which allow you to spend fewer resources.

Our recommendation is to choose materials/appliances/objects:
  • Based on renewable raw materials;
  • That are labelled to reduce their environmental impact;
  • With non-toxic components;
  • With great durability and biodegradable composition;
  • With environmentally friendly packaging.

If you implement our advice, you will help yourself, as you will notice significant savings in your consumption, and you will also help the environment, preserving not only the habitat of thousands of species, but above all the home of future generations.
