Cambridge relaunches free course to train volunteer teachers working with refugees
Cambridge University Press & Assessment has once again launched its award-winning MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) course to train volunteers and language teachers working with refugees. The free online course focuses on the skills needed to support the social and linguistic needs of refugees, and covers topics such as how to structure learning, supporting learning with resources, working in the classroom in a crisis situation, and understanding key linguistic and cultural differences, according to a statement sent to SUPERCASA News.

Volunteering with Refugees starts on May 30 and will last for three weeks. This free online course focuses on the social and linguistic needs of refugees and allows volunteers to understand the background, current situations and needs of refugees from a wide variety of contexts. These include strategies and techniques to use inside and outside the classroom, with a specific focus on language support.

Sofia Coelho, a Portuguese and French teacher, has been teaching host language Portuguese to Ukrainian refugees in Alverca since the beginning of April. The teacher who decided to participate in the Cambridge course says "I am very excited about the possibility, for three weeks, to learn directly from the world's leading experts in this field and, at the same time, to exchange impressions with other people from various parts of the world who, like me, support and teach refugees, and highlights the relevance that this type of training has for teachers working with refugee communities, "particularly in the context of supporting Ukrainian refugees in Portugal, it is especially important for us to better identify behaviors linked to trauma and implement more appropriate activities from the psychological and social point of view, and to adopt better strategies and resources with regard to language teaching.

Volunteering with Refugees is developed by Cambridge University Press & Assessment in collaboration with The Human Hive, an organization that provides training and support to Change Makers so that they can jointly create solutions to global problems and make the world more welcoming, inclusive and sustainable. The course will be taught in partnership with FutureLearn.

"The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has led to the displacement of millions of people, which has created a huge demand for learning support in countries across Europal," explains Luísa Geão, Head of Marketing for Europe at Cambridge. "There are a large number of refugees in Portugal who need language resources and more learning support. The course has already helped thousands of volunteers, so we relaunched it to contribute to the inspiring work that teachers around the world are doing to support refugees."

In its first edition, the course attracted over 8000 people and was awarded the Alliance Excellence Award by the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals. The course is the latest in a series of support measures from Cambridge, including a new webinar series to support English teachers in helping people affected by the current crisis in Ukraine. This series explored the various aspects of teaching in a troubled context, including working without textbooks and resources, and supporting young students who may have experienced trauma.
