The current economic situation, aggravated by the housing crisis, has caused
situations of need, especially for many families whose vulnerable situation is not being addressed. Specifically, we are talking about
26,312 families who are on a waiting list to access social housing, in 31 municipalities in the country's two major metropolitan areas,
Lisbon and
Oporto.
The numbers in Lisbon exceed those of Oporto, with 19,000 registered requests (well above the 7,400 registered in Greater Oporto), according to data from Expresso. This is a situation that stems from the lack of municipal properties available to meet the needs of families, with about 60% of the requests being renewed or coming in due to the current housing context.
In 2022, of the properties available for immediate delivery, only 658 houses were accounted for, responding to only 2.5% of the registered requests. In Lisbon there were 471 houses available for this purpose and in Porto only 187, numbers that fall short of the needs - despite the identification of 2,509 unoccupied municipal residences, in need of rehabilitation works, a solution that could, in the long term, respond to the requests of these households.
