If you want to apply for a housing loan to buy a house, however, the Bank of Portugal has classified you as a "defaulter", entering the "black list", find out how to get off this list.
Housing Credit: Getting off the Bank of Portugal's Black List
The Bank of Portugal assigned you the characteristic of "defaulter", entering the "black list". In this sense, it is essential to make a good management of your personal finances, in order to clear your name from the Bank of Portugal's black list and, consequently, see your housing credit application approved.

But how does the Bank of Portugal assign such a nuisance?

According to the Bank of Portugal itself, the Central Credit Register "contains information of a positive and negative nature, because all credit liabilities above 50 euros, contracted in the financial system, are communicated, regardless of whether they are in a regular situation or in default".

So, when you apply for a loan, one of the validations made by the banks is if your NIF is registered in the Banco de Portugal's black list and even if your spouse is on this list.

If you have your name on the Bank of Portugal's black list, it indicates that you are a bad debtor with your financial obligations. Therefore, any type of loan you request will be refused.

In this sense, learn how you can get your name off this black list.

Getting off the Banco de Portugal's Black List
First of all, don't be alarmed if you are informed that you have your name on the Bank of Portugal's black list. This is not necessarily bad.

The Central Credit Register contains all kinds of information, whether negative or positive, about credits contracted with the financial system, whether they are in default or not.

So, there are several ways to check your status at the Bank of Portugal:
  • Do it online, by going to Individuals / Central de Responsabilidades de Crédito;
  • Make a written request to Banco de Portugal;
  • Going in person to one of the service points of the institution.

By accessing this set of information, it is possible to understand several components, such as the nature of the credit, the terms, the amounts, the guarantees that exist and, of course, if it is in default or not.

If it defaults, your name is marked and that is when it is essential to clear your name from the Banco de Portugal's black list.

There are three alternatives:
#1 Payment
This is the most efficient way out.

The name ceases to be negatively present in the Bank of Portugal as soon as you pay the debts you have in default.

Thus, the entity with which you are in debt passes the information to the Bank of Portugal and the latter updates the situation. As a result, your file is clean again.

#2 Renegotiation
Renegotiation is always a possibility to be considered. You can always agree with the creditor on a payment plan that makes it possible to cope with the amount owed.

If you select this path, in the Bank of Portugal, the loan will then appear as renegotiated credit.

#3 Insolvency request
Finally, you can always file for insolvency, but this is the least advisable choice.

Among other components, the insolvent person will be included in the credit risk database of the Bank of Portugal and, for a period of five years, the Civil Registry will have this information.
