With 326 meters at its highest point, the Grândola mountain range (which extends through the municipality of Santiago de Cacém) is one of the most important natural components of the Grandolense space. Unlike most Portuguese mountains, oblique to the coast, Grândola’s is parallel to this, which hinders the penetration of sea air, although it contributes to the condensation of clouds. Its main watercourse - the river of Grândola or Davino river - of wooded banks, runs through a valley of dissymmetric slopes, with the right bank being a steeper slope. On the east side of the Santiago road, the relief has roughly the same altitude, and the main watercourse is the castelhanos river (tributary of the Davino). It should be noted that both streams remain largely dry during the summer, keeping only water in some caught. Due to its characteristics, the soils of the Serra de Grândola are generally poor and not suitable for agriculture, which led its owners to go through arboriculture. Currently, most of them are covered with cork oaks, which produce one of the best corks in Portugal. Here and beyond, you can also see small spots of pine and eucalyptus trees. In the spaces of least human intervention, spontaneous vegetation continues to prevail, consisting of sargaças, estevas, urses, silvas, medronheiros, carrasqueiros, zambujeiros, gilbardeiros and other mediterranean plants. #ref:LB_15
