The reduction of VAT on food products was already being discussed, given the high prices currently being charged, and a tripartite set of measures was already on the table, specifically through negotiations with and support to producers and distributors. Thus, following these plans, Fernando Medida announced, last Friday, 24 March, that he will even go ahead with the application of zero VAT in several consumer goods considered as essential, in addition to negotiations and support to distributors and producers in the food sector.
The Finance Minister stressed that this is an "innovative solution", which will allow for a drop in prices and greater stability, not only for families but, and because there will be support measures, for producers and distributors of these same goods.
What foods are included in the zero VAT list?
The list is not yet closed, but it has already been possible to ascertain which foods will be included in the elimination of VAT on their price.
On the final list, whose application of zero VAT will lead to a reduction in price, are:
- Carrots, onions and tomatoes;
- Half-fat milk, cheese, eggs and yoghurts;
- Chicken, pork, turkey meat and beef;
- Bread, various fruits and vegetables;
- Beans, chickpeas and other legumes;
- Vegetable oils, margarine and olive oil.
The aim is to apply zero VAT to all goods considered essential, however, this list is still under negotiation and may change. The measure in question should only be in force until October, for six months, until a definitive conclusion is reached, being "a mix of French and Spanish solution", with the need to close all agreements and negotiations with the production sector.
