History of Praça da Viscountess dos Olivais, Olivais Velho, Lisbon - Classified as IIP - Property of Public Interest Created in 1397 by D. João Anes, Archbishop of Lisbon, on land located, then, at the end of the capital, the parish of Olivais comprised at the time small urban agglomerations, spread over a vast area, ranging from The Cricket, to the south, to Sacavém, to the north, including Marvila and Cabo Ruivo. The extension of the parish would only be changed in the mid-eighteenth century, with the creation of the parish of Beato. The parish church of Olivais was built at the beginning of the next century, and the mesh of the urban complex that today is known as Olivais Velho began to define itself in the sixteenth century, with the construction of houses around the matrix. From the 17th century on, the Lisbon nobility began to build their recreational farms on land in the parish of Olivais, which until then were mostly inserted in the domains of religious communities. It was also in the 1600s that a community of arrábidos friars was installed in the parish, which founded the Convent of S. Cornelius, of which there are no traces left. The violent earthquake of 1755 destroyed the parish church, promptly rebuilt. In the urban complex stands out the Casa Viscountess dos Olivais, located on one of the tops of the square, a building of considerable dimensions, with four gates on the ground floor and nine windows of balcony with iron rods on the upper floor. This building, dating from 1866, was acquired by D. Maria Rosa da Veiga Araújo, Viscountess dos Olivais, who founded in 1896 an asylum for poor children. Currently, a day care center and kindergarten, belonging to the D. Pedro IV Foundation, is located on site. The center of the square, outlined by a cobbled rectangle, with trees, was being used, over time, for the recreational activities of the neighborhood. In 1896, a cast iron bandstand was erected, based on a brick base, where the Union Philharmonic Society and Capricho Olivalense, established in 1886, held concerts.
