It occupies an area of 3.2 square kilometers and is the parish church of the municipality. Due to its antiquity and location, the parish of S. Sebastião is the historic and commercial center of Ponta Delgada, the city where it is integrated. In it, therefore, there is only one economic sector: the tertiary sector. It includes the services of official entities (Presidency of the Government, Regional Secretariat for the Economy, Regional Secretariat for Science, Technology and Equipment, Delegation of the Regional Assembly of the Azores and Municipality of Ponta Delgada); Notary and Notarial Registry as well as RDP/RTP, private (Autoviação Micaelense, Lda., Açoriano Oriental newspapers and also typographies, Insular Lda. and Micaelense, Lda.); and commerce of all kinds: food and clothing; decorative arts and goldsmithery; pharmacies, building materials and real estate; vacations and travel; etc., we also have in our Parish the Regional Airline SATA. These services and commercial activities contribute greatly to the development and wealth of the island and the city, balancing the family budget of many people who, often, from far away, come here to work every day. Density: 126.5 inhabitants/km². Candelária has a road that connects Mosteiros and Ponta Delgada. The main activity is agriculture. Candelaria is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southwest and has a mountain range to the north and northwest. The existence of a very high rock along the entire length of Candelaria, makes the soil of this parish uneven with the waters of the sea, which explains the lack of beaches and a very jagged coast. The name of Candelaria has been given to this place since its settlement, probably before the year 1500’, half a century after the settlement of the island of São Miguel. The name Candelaria comes from the great religiosity of the Virgin Our Lady of the Candles, who has always been patron saint in this church. Topographically, the parish of Candelaria is made up of hills that are sometimes interrupted by valleys and a large number of gullies.
