Later, with the Visigoth invasion, it again took on importance as an episcopal see. After being captured by the Arabs, it took the name of Qasr Abu Danis, where one of the strongest fortresses of the Iberian Peninsula was built. The Vikings tried to take it but failed. During Arab times it was the capital of Al-Kassr province. King Afonso Henriques conquered it in 1158. Later retaken by the Moors, it was only during the reign of King Alfonso II, and with the help of a fleet of Crusaders that the town was conquered once and for all and it became the headquarters of the Order of Santiago.
