The western portion of its metropolitan area, the Portuguese Riviera, is home to the westernmost point of Continental Europe, culminating in Cabo da Roca. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world[2] and the second oldest European capital (after Athens), predating other modern European capitals by centuries. [3] Settled by pre-Celtic tribes and later by the Phoenicians, Julius Caesar made the city a municipality called Felicitas Julia,[4] adding the term to the name Olissipo. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was ruled by a number of Germanic tribes from the fifth century onwards, most notably the Visigoths. In the eighth century, however, it was captured by the Moors. In 1147, Afonso Henriques conquered the city and in 1255 the town became the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal, replacing Coimbra.
