Throughout the twentieth century, the parish of Alhos Vedros would continue to have an essentially rural aspect, although, from the greater development of CUF’s manufacturing unit in Barreiro, and in the second half of the century of other large industries such as Lisnave or Steel, it would gain some features of a dormitory for many families with proletarian characteristics. In terms of industries residing in the parish, the cork sector would be the most important until the 60s/70s, followed by an intense but short expansion of the textile sector in the 70s and 80s, which would come to an end throughout the 90s. Currently, especially in the last twenty years, it has been undergoing an accelerated process of suburbanisation that has decharacterized its traditional characteristics. Currently, especially in the last twenty years, it has been undergoing an accelerated process of suburbanisation that has decharacterized its traditional characteristics. In terms of heritage, the aforementioned Mother Church of São Lourenço stands out, the only complete Manueline pillory in the district of Setúbal, the so-called Moorish well, probably from the sixteenth century and its tidal mill. However, most traces of its centuries-old origins and historical past have been progressively disappearing, as well as the rich natural heritage of the long riverside area itself has been destroyed, first with the effects of industrial pollution and then due to the rubble of the old salt pans and fish ponds that existed in the marsh area. Here is some of the heritage in this parish: Chapel of the Holy House of Mercy of Alhos Vedros Chapel of the Church of São Lourenço or Mother Church of Alhos Vedros Pillory of Alhos Vedros We are available to assist you in obtaining your Financing, we are Linked Credit Intermediaries, registered with Banco de Portugal under number 0002867. Land in Rua Isabel Aboim Inglês, Alhos Vedros, Moita

Land 213 m² E.C.: Exempt property
Its origins date back to the period before the Christian Reconquest, since in the ’Memórias Paroquiais de 1758’ there is an account, certainly of semi-apocryphal content, of how its inhabitants would have resisted the Muslim attacks on a Palm Sunday on the occasion of the recovery of Palmela by the Christians. Its municipal statute appeared well before the fourteenth century, extending the limits of its boundary from the river of Coina to the estuaries of Alcochete, forming one of the four medieval municipalities - called the municipality of Ribatejo - on the South Bank, together with Almada, Sesimbra and Palmela. However, he shared the dignity of head of the municipality of Ribatejo with Sabonha (today S. Francisco, in Alcochete). In 1415, following the Black Death pandemic that ravaged the capital and led to the death of Queen Philippa of Lancaster herself, it was in Alhos Vedros that King João I took refuge, receiving, according to the chronicler Gomes Eanes de Zurara, a commission headed by some of his sons with the aim of making the final decisions regarding the initiative for the conquest of Ceuta. The importance of Alhos Vedros in the context was confirmed on December 15, 1514, when it was the third town in the region (after Palmela and Almada) to receive the so-called New Charter, awarded by King Manuel. To his Mother Church - of which St. Lawrence is the patron saint - all the people of the localities of the term were obliged to come for Sunday religious services and the main festivities of the religious calendar.
