Gaspar Frutuoso, a well-known chronicler, mentions that, on that river, there would have been four sugar mills, at the time when sugar cane was a successful crop. The foundation of the town of Água d’Alto dates back to 1511, and it remained an integral part of the parish of São Pedro until August 1907, when it was elevated to the status of parish. Lugar da Praia is also part of this parish, located next to the river with the same name.
