Facing the sea that made Viana’s history, a Baroque church guards the image of Senhora da Agonia, a devotion of the fishermen. Every year, on August 20th, it sets sail to bless the sea in one of Portugal’s most colorful festivals, where the beauty and richness of traditional costumes are on display. Viana is also known for its gold filigree and has managed to maintain its traditions, as can be seen in the Costume Museum (costume and gold), the Municipal Museum (with a special focus on Viana’s typical pottery), or the Gil Eanes ship. Built in Viana do Castelo’s shipyards to support cod fishing, the ship is now anchored here as a memory of the city’s maritime and shipbuilding traditions. In the city’s surroundings, you can take a walk along the coastal or river bike path or one of the many marked trails, as well as practice surfing, windsurfing, or kitesurfing and bodyboarding on fine, golden sand beaches.
