Build Lab returns in October with its second edition, reinforcing the commitment to bring practical training closer to the reality of the construction industry in Portugal. Promoted by Segmento Urbano, the event will take place on 3 and 4 October, in Paços de Ferreira, and aims to respond to a growing need: the shortage of skilled labour and accessible programmes for those wishing to start a career in the sector.
Dedicated to Basic Construction Techniques, this edition adopts an intensive format that combines theory and practice in a real worksite context. Over two days, participants will gain direct experience in four essential areas for any construction worker: iron bending and reading of structural projects, assembly of formwork using the PERI Duo system, waterproofing of roofs with Neotex PU solutions and masonry laying.
Training applied in a real environment
The main differential of Build Lab is the way it prioritises hands-on training on site, bringing trainees closer to the concrete experience of everyday professional life. Unlike purely theoretical courses, here the knowledge is applied directly in the field, with guidance from specialised technicians and experienced trainers. The goal is simple: to provide solid, useful learning that can be immediately applied in the job market.
The organisation also highlights the partnerships that make this project possible. In 2025, collaboration with Neotex Portugal, a European benchmark in waterproofing, strengthens the technical component and ensures access to state-of-the-art materials. The PERI Duo formwork system, known for its lightness, durability and ease of use, will also be featured, allowing participants to experience a solution that is already internationally recognised. In addition, AICCOPN supports the dissemination of the initiative, increasing its visibility among potential professionals and companies.
With only 24 places available, the selection process prioritises the profile and order of registration of candidates. Applications are open from 8 to 28 September, via an online form. The course is free of charge and includes a participation certificate, a factor that increases its relevance for those seeking to enhance their CV or enter the sector for the first time.
New professionals for a sector in transformation
Another important aspect is the possibility for trainees to apply for internships at Segmento Urbano, opening doors to real opportunities for professional integration. This direct link between training and employability shows that Build Lab is not just a one-off event, but part of a long-term strategy to boost the sector.
The purpose goes beyond teaching techniques. The mission is to contribute to the recognition of construction professions, often undervalued despite their vital importance in the economy and in community life. Creating a new generation of qualified and motivated workers is seen as an essential step for the future of construction in Portugal.
The practical school model also seeks to break cultural prejudices, encouraging learning directly on site. This approach brings participants closer to professional reality and challenges the idea that technical training is secondary. On the contrary, it shows that learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to acquire solid, market-valued skills.
Build Lab positions itself as a pioneering project in Portugal. In a context where the construction sector faces a shortage of qualified professionals, initiatives like this play a decisive role. The industry needs not only workers but people prepared to deal with new materials, advanced technologies and environmental requirements.
More than training, Build Lab seeks to inspire. For many participants, it may be their first contact with the profession and possibly the start of a solid career. For the sector, it represents a practical response to a historical gap: the lack of accessible programmes that integrate theory, practice and employability.
With the second edition about to begin, Build Lab returns in October with the promise of continuing to build not only walls and structures, but also future professionals prepared for the challenges of modern construction.
