It is the headquarters of the municipality of Ribeira Grande[3] with 180.15 km² of area and 32 112 inhabitants (2011[1]), subdivided into 14 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the east by the municipality of Nordeste, to the south by the municipality of Povoação, Vila Franca do Campo and Lagoa, to the west by Ponta Delgada, and to the north it has a coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The village of Ribeira Grande was elevated to the category of city on June 29, 1981. The 14 parishes that make up the municipality of Ribeira Grande are as follows: Calhetas, Conceição, Fenais da Ajuda Lomba da Maia, Lomba de São Pedro, Maia, Matriz, Pico da Pedra, Porto Formoso, Rabo de Peixe, Ribeira Seca, Ribeirinha Santa Barbara and São Brás. Azorean Emigration Museum - Born from adaptation works in the old fish market of that city. It was inaugurated on September 9, 2005 in the former facilities of the Peixe Shed, with the aim of being a space of memory of one of the most outstanding Azorean social phenomena of recent centuries, but also to support the emigrants, at the informative and logistical level, and to strengthen the regional tourist offer. #ref:4391
