The name of Candelaria has been given to this place since its settlement, probably before the year 1500’, half a century after the settlement of the island of São Miguel. The name Candelaria comes from the great religiosity of the Virgin Our Lady of the Candles, who has always been patron saint in this church. Topographically, the parish of Candelaria is made up of hills that are sometimes interrupted by valleys and a large number of gullies.
