Na década de 1960 transformou-se num importante destino turístico graças à sua praia de dois quilómetros de extensão, passando de uma pequena povoação a uma das maiores cidades do Algarve. O tradicional casario deu lugar a torres de apartamentos junto ao mar, com pouca estética e ordenamento. Por isso, não tem o encanto de outros destinos da região, mas continua a ser muito concorrida pela oferta de alojamento com preços mais acessíveis. Aliás, é uma alternativa bem mais económica à vizinha Vilamoura a oeste e aos luxuosos aldeamentos turísticos de Vale do Lobo e Quinta do Lago, a leste. É muito procurada pelas famílias portuguesas, que chegam a passar aqui uma ou duas semanas de férias no verão. Recebe poucos turistas estrangeiros, pois nem costuma ser mencionada nas publicações turísticas internacionais. Isto faz com que continue a ser um destino de baixo custo, com restaurantes e alojamentos mais baratos. A sua localização, sensivelmente a meio da costa algarvia, próxima de Faro e de Albufeira, também a torna um bom ponto de partida para explorar a região. Não possui monumentos históricos, mas para uma dose de cultura, é fácil dar um passeio até Faro. O longo areal divide-se em seis pequenas praias separadas por molhes, cada uma com cerca de 300 metros de comprimento. Embora cada praia tenha o seu próprio nome (Praia da Rosa Branca, Praia Azul, Praia de Dom José, Praia do Vidal, Praia JV e Praia da Gaivota ou Praia do Forte Novo), estes raramente são usados, sendo o conjunto referido simplesmente como Praia da Quarteira. Em agosto costuma ficar completamente lotada. No verão, o mar é calmo, mas ganha profundidade rapidamente, por isso é preciso ter cuidado, sobretudo com as crianças. Entre junho e setembro há vigilância de nadadores-salvadores e a possibilidade de se alugar chapéus de sol e espreguiçadeiras. Também tem Bandeira Azul, indicando qualidade ambiental, e dispõe de acesso para pessoas com mobilidade reduzida. Atrás da praia fica a Avenida Infante de Sagres, um passeio marítimo com palmeiras e uma grande oferta de restaurantes e comércio, e ainda parques infantis e equipamento para exercício. A extremidade nascente é completamente pedonal e tem muitas vezes animação e música ao vivo, convidando a passeios de dia ou depois do jantar. Aqui a animação é para todas as idades, bem diferente da noite nos bares de Albufeira. Na extremidade poente do passeio estão os mercados de frutas e peixe que ocupam dois edifícios decorados com painéis de azulejos. É aqui que quem vive em Quarteira e os muitos turistas compram as frutas, os legumes e o peixe fresco. A maioria do peixe que se encontra aqui é trazido de manhã pelos pescadores, à excepção do salmão, que é importado.
