It was the county seat between 1836 and 1855. It was constituted by the parishes of Cercal, Colos and Vila Nova de Milfontes. It had, in 1849, 3 255 inhabitants. The village was elevated on June 20, 1991, and its designation was changed from Cercal to Cercal do Alentejo. Economy: In the 19th century, mining was developed, particularly in the 1970s, with the discovery of new ores such as barite, manganese and manganite.
