Boliqueime is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Loulé, with an area of 46.21 km2[ and a population of 4789 inhabitants. Its population density is 103.6 inhabitants per square kilometre, which means it can be classified as a Low Density Area (Ministerial Order 1467-A/2001). History This parish was joined to the municipality of Albufeira by the prefecture. By the Law of 17 April 1838, it was annexed to the old Municipality of Loulé and returned to the Municipality of Albufeira between 10 July 1839 and 24 October 1855, when Boliqueime definitively became part of the new Municipality of Loulé, where it remains today. Boliqueime arose where there are waterholes. The place name ’Boliqueime’ derives from the Italian ’bulicame’, which means ’hot spring’, and the creation of this village is linked to the Genoese, Venetians and Sicilians who, in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, travelled to the Algarve coast for tuna and whale fishing and went to Olhos D’Água (i.e. Boliqueime) to load up on essential drinking water. Obviously the Portuguese suffix ’-queime’ replaced the false Italian suffix ’-came’, thus expressing the meaning of the adjective ’termal’. This name, which appealed to its inhabitants, was adopted by the locals and has remained in the village since Boliqueime ’moved’ to where it is today. #ref: 104980
