’Morelena is a land of the parish of Almargem do Bispo, Pero Pinheiro and Montelavar, in the municipality of Sintra, Portugal. It was until 1988 a locality of the parish of Montelavar, having started to incorporate the parish of Pêro Pinheiro with the same creation. Pero Pinheiro is one of the twenty parishes of the municipality of Sintra (in the district of Lisbon), with 16.06 km² of area. It was elevated to town status on August 24, 1989. There are three units of the Portuguese Air Force, in place of the Granja do Marquês: Air Base No. 1 (B.A.l), the Air Force Academy and the Institute of Higher Studies of the Air Force. Roughly between Sintra and Mafra, by E.N.9., it is the main center of transformation of ornamental stones in Portugal and considered one of the largest in Europe. The Convent of Mafra was built of liós stone (a limestone, whitish, compact, hard, often containing fossils) from the region of Pero Pinheiro ’ Geographical Aspects The municipality of Sintra, in the district of Lisbon, is located in the Lisbon Region (NUT II) in the Greater Lisbon North (NUT III). It is located on the northern slope of the Sintra mountain range at 206 meters of altitude and is about 30 km from the capital. It is bordered to the south by the municipalities of Oeiras and Cascais, to the east by the municipalities of Amadora and Loures, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north by the municipality of Mafra.
