Its population density is 42.5 inhabitants/km². It is located to the east of Ponta Delgada and Lagoa and southeast of Ribeira Grande. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the south and mountains to the north. The main economic activities are agriculture and tourism. Furnas is well known for its thermal waters, namely the calderas, Poça da Beija and thermal pools. In addition, Furnas is known for the Hotel Terra Nostra, consisting of a natural pool of thermal waters and a magnificent botanical garden, the Terra Nostra Park and you can also visit the natural park where you can find some animals and some species of plants. It is also in Furnas that you can find a lagoon, the Furnas Lagoon. Also traditional from Furnas are the bolos lêvedos and the curious stew where the ingredients are cooked underground under the heat of the volcanoes (the meat takes about 5 to 6 hours and the cod about 3 to 4 hours).
