Manuel reformed D. Dinis’ charter, granting the town the title of ’Noble and Honoured’. In 1755, Aljezur was devastated by an earthquake. Bishop D. Francisco Gomes do Avelar ordered the construction of the church of Nossa Senhora D’Alva on the outskirts of the village, so that the inhabitants could settle there and a new population could develop.
