Because it is located on the coast, this region was often ravaged by pirates, who pillaged and assaulted the population and vessels. In the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the Maghrebi Corsican afflicted the Portuguese coasts in a dramatic way. To face this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the sixteenth century it was ordered to build the fort of São Clemente (castle of Milfontes). This locality is linked to the great feat of Portuguese aviation that was the first crossing area between Portugal and Macau, carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was on April 7, 1924 that the pilots departed from Campo dos Coitos, near Milfontes, towards the East. In honor of the aviators and their historical achievement, a monument was erected in Praça da Barbacã, next to the fort, that recalls the heroic journey. It should be noted that Commander Brito Paes was a native of the municipality of Odemira, more specifically of Colos.
