Its inhabitants were engaged in fishing and salt extraction. A land of fishermen and country people, it led an obscure life, although it was elevated to town in 1521. On the estuary of the Tagus River, which enters the Coina River at Barreiro, there was Vale de Zebro, where ovens were once built to manufacture the biscuits that supplied the ships that left Lisbon, heading to India and Brazil. On both banks of the estuaries there were tidal mills that made flour for the biscuits. The municipality of Barreiro, when the municipality of Alhos Vedros was extinguished on October 24, 1855, became part of the parishes of Palhais and Lavradio. From then on, Barreiro would become a ’modern industrial and workers’ village’, completely transforming the old aspect of the village, both socially, economically, and urbanistically, Barreiro was transfigured.
